Can Current Earth Observation Technologies Provide Useful Information on Soil Organic Carbon Stocks for Environmental Land Management Policy?

چکیده

Earth Observation (EO) techniques could offer a more cost-effective and rapid approach for reliable monitoring, reporting, verification (MRV) of soil organic carbon (SOC). Here, we analyse the available published literature to assess whether it may be possible estimate SOC using data from sensors mounted on satellites airborne systems. This is complemented with research series semi-structured interviews experts in health policy areas understand level accuracy that acceptable MRV approaches SOC. We also perform cost-accuracy analysis approaches, including use EO techniques, assessment context new UK Environmental Land Management scheme. summarise state-of-the-art identify 3 themes 25 key suggestions concerns expert interviews. Notably, over three-quarters respondents considered ‘validation accuracy’ 90% or better would required EO-based as an effective system monitoring reporting stocks. The revealed combination technology situ sampling has potential reliable, estimating at local scale (4 ha), although several challenges remain. conclude by proposing framework collates integrates seven criteria multiple sources appropriate scales.

Land-cover effects on soil organic carbon stocks in a European city.

Soil is the vital foundation of terrestrial ecosystems storing water, nutrients, and almost three-quarters of the organic carbon stocks of the Earth's biomes. Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks vary with land-cover and land-use change, with significant losses occurring through disturbance and cultivation. Although urbanisation is a growing contributor to land-use change globally, the effects of u...

Critical carbon input to maintain current soil organic carbon stocks in global wheat systems

Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in croplands is a crucial component of global carbon (C) cycle. Depending on local environmental conditions and management practices, typical C input is generally required to reduce or reverse C loss in agricultural soils. No studies have quantified the critical C input for maintaining SOC at global scale with high resolution. Such information will provide a b...

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

What are the effects of agricultural management on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks?

Background: Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks significantly influence the atmospheric C concentration. Agricultural management practices that increase SOC stocks thus may have profound effects on climate mitigation. Additional benefits include higher soil fertility since increased SOC stocks improve the physical and biological properties of the soil. Intensification of agriculture and...

Effects of Land Use and Land Cover changes on Soil Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen Stocks in the Olesharo Catchment, Narok County, Kenya

Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC) is the most prominent cause of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) variability in any landscape. Kenyan Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) have been facing extensive land use/ cover changes in the last three decades prompting a review on the impacts it has on soil quality and consequently on land degradation. This study was carried out in 2016 in Olesharo Catchment, N...
